Ocean Originations: The Water of Life
Human beings naturally
feel a need to explain life, and why it is the way it is. Ancient
peoples did this by creating particular kinds of stories, namely myths.
One question they felt most needed explanation was, where do we come from?
The creation myths developed to answer this question were influenced by the
ways particular peoples in different cultures lived. Egyptian, Japanese,
and Babylonian cultures all depended on agriculture and/or fishing for food,
and because both of these practices rely heavily on water, these cultures
came to view water as the source of all life. This view influenced
their creation myths in an obvious way, the cosmos must have originated in
water.
